rec: from monte carlo, with love

  • Sep. 7th, 2008 at 4:03 PM
(Incidentally, I'm sorry for not posting the last couple of days! I shall be making up for it with these two and one more later today!)

Story: From Monte Carlo, With Love
Author: livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2254
Author's Summary: The quest is the quest. Throw in a couple of pirate hats, and stir.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schoffield, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds, Ace/Hex, Rose/Mickey/Jake, there's some other mixes as well, like a bit of Rose/Ace.
Warnings: None

Recced because: I ALMOST feel bad reccing something of [info]livii's because her stuff is so uniformly good it speaks for itself but this one is just so much fun. I love the glimpse into what Rose and Mickey and Jake got up to and what they were like together in the alt!verse. I love the similarities drawn between Rose/Mickey/Jake and Ace/Hex because to me at least, Ace and Rose are quite similar, as are their relationships with the men in the fic and that really works well, I think. They're just a really good pairing and threesome to throw together, they've got a lot in common and they snark so well. To top it all of, they're thrown together in a very fun, caper-ish type adventure thing with silly costumes! Don't be put off if you haven't met Hex before, [info]livii has his voice and his relationship with Ace down really well so you could arguably use this fic to work out whether you might like him or not!

And have an excerpt. )

Washington Post article about how vampires continue to fascinate. Includes references to the Buffy movie, "an otherwise middling teen vampire comedy that unexpectedly led to a fantastic TV show."

rec: like ships that crash in the night

Story: Like Ships That Crash In The Night
Author: tangerine
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1526
Author's Summary: From a deep sleep Jo slowly became aware that someone was shaking her by the shoulders.
"Jo, you have to get up, there's some bloke at the door wants to see you. Funny old-fashioned coat, says he's the Doctor."
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Jo Grant
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Eight Doctor needed cheering up during the Time War...so he went to visit Jo. I feel that should say it all right there, really. These two work fantastically well together and the author has their voices down pat, I think. Wonderfully captures Jo, her relationship with Three and Eight's view of same. The wibbley wobbley timey wimey aspect is really well played too. It's also heaps of fun to get a glimpse into Jo's life AWAY from UNIT and the Doctor. I don't know whether I ought to say this or not but there is the odd typo. It's nothing major that a quick beta wouldn't fix and they're so SO well worth ignoring.

Polar by Elfin (NC-17)

  • Sep. 7th, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Hi there! I'm [info]bistokids, and I'll be at the wheel of the Life on Mars van for the month of September. I'm a confirmed slasher, and 'ship Sam/Gene as my OTP, so my recs will probably be weighted in that direction - but I'll try and include a few gen entries, and maybe even the odd other pairing, just for fairness!
So, here goes with rec one...

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt; Gene Hunt/OMC (non-con)
Length: Part 1 - 1,100 words; Part 2 - 13,500 words
Author on LJ: [info]elfinessy
Author Website: Elfin's Life on Mars archive
Why this must be read:
In a nutshell, because it's Elfin. This author has done more to draw readers into the fandom than any other, through her comprehensive and user-friendly website. And her thoughtful characterisation, rounded plots and vivid storytelling skills place her up with the very best the fandom has to offer.

'Polar' is where my own Life on Mars fanfiction journey started, and it's a story I regularly revisit. It's in two parts - the first is short and packs a hell of a punch. It contains a brutal and graphic description of the rape of a main character by a canon villain - if you find this too squicky, it's not necessary to read part 1 for an understanding of the story as a whole. (I've included links to both parts, so take your pick).

Part two is much longer, and deals with the aftermath of the attack, the development of the professional and personal relationship between Sam and Gene, and Sam's own feelings on how this event impacts on his carefully constructed perceptions of Gene and 1973 at large. Inevitably, there's a decided element of h/c, but Elfin's complex characterisation maintains the integrity of the canon characters, while rounding and softening them somewhat without mawkishness or excessive sentimentality.

Part Two here
Fandom: House, M.D
Pairing: Amber/Thirteen
Author on LJ: [info]maypirate
Author Website: @ LJ

Why this must be read:

Thirteen won. This one is set after 4.9, and features a fabulous Amber: unhappy, angry, trying *so* hard not to care. And, of course, hating Thirteen.

"Could be that I just like being a bitch." And maybe that's true. Maybe it's all just about notches in the bedpost, scars across her heart, titles won and lost in every right and wrong answer. If you never let them know you keep track and still care, they can't hurt you where it counts.

"Sure. I'll buy that." Thirteen quirks up the side of her mouth, half-smiling. "You know I'm kind of going to miss you."

"Aw, really?" She cocks her head to the side, making as condescending a pouting face as she can. "You think we could've grown into the bestest friends?"

"I think we could have been bestest enemies," Thirteen says.

I love this pairing, and this story captures it in its fabulous, hatesex glory.

The History of Being Wrong

Interview in The Observer

Interview in The Observer.

More recently, Piper went to Toys R Us to look at nursery equipment. 'Suddenly, all these kids are chuckling and following you around. And you turn a corner and there are dolls of you everywhere and massive pictures. It's quite frightening.' Piper smiles wryly. 'I think it must be hard being David [Tennant]. I get a certain level of attention but - I've seen it in action - he can't move for attention.'

Two fic requests. I'm looking for...

1) Fics in which one of The Doctor's New Who companions (preferably Rose, Jack or Martha) ends up on Gallifrey. I don't care if it's AU or whatever. I would prefer it if there's SOMETHING romantic between The Doctor and said companion even if its only the level shown in canon, but it's by no means a requitement.

2) New Who all human AU (I have so much shame)

Good writing a plus!

Thanks in advance.

Pondering...

  • Sep. 7th, 2008 at 2:51 PM
I decided to make a new post so as not to hijack the comments in the request post.

But something I found interesting...

There was a request post for smut with Ten/Rose/Jack and apparently there isn't much?

I'm wondering - and I'll admit up front that my bias is and always will be Nine/Rose/Jack - if it's because there hasn't been very much interaction as a threesome with Ten/Rose/Jack in the show (I'm not sure if there's been any but I haven't seen the last few eps yet so I don't know if there are any scenes between the three of them) and though Nine/Rose/Jack was short, it was very intense. Plus, Nine/Rose/Jack as a concept has been around in real time longer, so I'm sure that is a factor as well.

But I was just curious... do you, my fellow OT3 fans, think there's a reason? It's not like there's not plenty of Ten smut in general, with and without Rose for that matter, so it can't be that factor.

Buffy MMORPG In Development

Twentieth Century Fox is working with The Multiverse Network to create a massively multiplayer game based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to be released in beta later this year.

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky & Hutch
Length: 66k
Author on LJ: NA
Author Website: Kaye Austen Michaels at Twin Dolphin Productions
Why this must be read:

Kaye Austen Michaels is one of those authors, that when a new reader enters this wonderful, vintage fandom and asks, "Where do I start in thirty years of fic?", she is one of the authors instantly recced. Her stories are a joy to read, deep without drowning you, with the ability to focus in on a character's thoughts and feelings as if they were your own.

This story is the first of three in a series called the "Holidays Of Our Lives" series, all of which can be found on the page cited above. Here, Hutch is beginning to realize the depth of his feelings for Starsky, and is jealous of Lyza, a woman with whom Starsky is spending a lot of his time.

Being Halloween, they end up at a Halloween party of sorts, just Hutch and Starsky, after a dinner that had been only for the two of them, which pleases Hutch immensely, giving him hope.

A haunted hike had Starsky practically bouncing with enthusiasm. I told myself to get a grip.

"You're going to voluntarily walk around in 'haunted' woods at night armed only with a flashlight? Who are you?"

"I'm whoever you want me to be." The look on his face was anything but teasing. I half-swallowed my tongue and turned away. I wasn't certain of anything right now and I could not make the mistake of assuming too many givens.

The Happiest Halloween
Don't forget that the deadline for ficafest stories is Monday the 8th! Of course, you can post later if you aren't finished – we want to see your stories no matter what, but hope to see a few people posting soon!

Prompt: Rose crosses paths with alternate versions of herself.

Some Are Boojums

  • Sep. 6th, 2008 at 11:53 PM
Story: Some Are Boojums
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1765
Author's Summary: What I tell you three times is true - AU from Last of the Time Lords.
Characters/Pairings: Lucy Saxon, The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: none

Recced because:

Some Are Boojums is a mind-trip, a slippery thing to grasp, and an amazing feat. It is amazing. In the spirit of the story I’ll tell that three times: Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! I’ve read it at least eight times, and new meanings unfurl themselves each time.

Amy_wolf has taken Lewis Carol’s epic nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark and used it as the basis for a truly inspired glimpse at what might have happened had the Master lived at the end of The Last of the Timelords. The Master narrates the story to various unidentified companions, and, as he slips further into insanity, you can’t help but feel sorry for him. As for the Doctor, well, his insatiable desire to ‘fix’ things is worrying to say the least!

You don’t need to have read Lewis Carol’s poem to understand this story (I hadn’t the first time I read it), but I encourage you to seek out that poem anyway, since it’s readily available online and makes for a good mind-trip in and of itself.

The Tightrope Walker by Caro Dee (FRAO)

  • Sep. 6th, 2008 at 11:33 PM
Hi, I'm [info]snycock, and I'm going to be driving The Sentinel van for September. I'm fairly new to the fandom, but one of the things that has really impressed me is how active it is, especially since the first run on television ended over ten years ago and it hasn't been shown much in syndication since then. So in addition to reccing some of my favorites, I'm also going to highlight some of the communities and events that keep The Sentinel fandom thriving.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair, Jim/Original Character
Length: 3k
Author on LJ: [info]carodee
Author Website: Caro Dee's Insatiable Site
Why this must be read:

Caro posted this during the last round of [info]mmom, and I think it's a brilliantly complex and layered view of Jim. She does a stunning job exploring how Jim deals with his control issues while still acknowledging the deep love between him and Blair. It's angsty and painful and heartwarming, all at once. A fantastic read.

The Tightrope Walker

http://www.comicmix.com/news/2008/09/06/comicmix-radio-joss-whedon-spills-the-back-story/

He tells us about "A Shepherd's Tale" and why he decided to do Book's story now, saying that he wouldn't want to wait for the sequel even if there were one.

[Which there's not, of course.] The bulk of the info starts at 5:14. They mention the Buffy MMO at 1:44. He also says he's "struggling yet again to get my scripts in" and "I'm a little overextended." Poor Joss! Now get back to work!

Edited to cut down the first para.

Icons!

  • Sep. 6th, 2008 at 7:57 PM
So a couple of people asked for Secret Life of Dolls icons, and I thought, well, I don't have a digital camera to take posed pictures with, and my copy of Photoshop hates me and won't let me use 90% of my fonts so I'm mostly stuck with Arial these days, so... would it actually be possible to make anything decent? Well, I can't turn down a challenge, so...

I understand that nobody ever believes anybody when they say they want something for "a friend..."

*g*

My sister (yes, the one I mentioned in the previous post) just wrote again, this time asking for Twilight fanfic recs. Yes, she wants fanfic! Heh.

Not my fandom, so I don't know what there is out there in the way of "Bella/Edward, angst-fine-but-happy/hopeful-ending, any rating" fic, but any recs you guys could give would be much appreciated.

Conch Shell Fic

  • Sep. 6th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
Hello,

My computer died and I lost all my bookmarks. There was a story I cam across a while ago an Elizabeth / AnnaMaria femslash about a conch shell. The two women were sitting at a bar and Elizabeth asked about a shell AnaMaria had. AnaMaria then went into an erotic explination about it being a woman while she fingered Elizabeth under the table. I'm fairly certain I read it on livejournal. Does anyone here know it? Thanks in advance!

Dr. Horrible's Freeze Ray in The Middleman?

  • Sep. 6th, 2008 at 10:56 PM

http://community.abcfamily.go.com/watch/middleman

The season one finale of The Middleman finds a very familiar-looking weapon serving as the McGuffin for the episode.

The link should take you to ABC Family's video player. The episode, called The Palindrome Reversal Palindrome doesn't seem to be available for viewing at the moment, but the screen cap is still there. I think the two props are one in the same, but you can always watch the episode in iTunes and judge for yourselves.
